Frequently
Asked Questions
1.
What kinds of problems does Vein & Cosmetic Solutions
treat?
Varicose veins,
spider veins, phlebitis and venous stasis ulcers. We are
happy to evaluate any kind of vein problem.
2. What kinds
of treatments are offered?
We do a comprehensive
evaluation, which includes an examination by
Jeff Widmeyer M.D., a board certified vascular surgeon, and an ultrasound examination
of the veins. Treatments may include laser and injection therapy
for smaller
veins. For larger veins, laser closure and surgical removal of the veins may
be
recommended.
3. Do you
do vein stripping?
Dr. Widmeyer
does occasionally surgically remove some veins, which has
been known as "stripping," but the method used is much different
than many
people's idea of vein stripping. The laser closure procedure replaces vein
stripping in most people and is done under local anesthesia
at the Vein & Cosmetic Solutions. Most patients are able to go
back to work in two days. Dr. Widmeyer
customizes each person's treatment to offer the best long-term and cosmetic
results.
4. What about
just injecting the veins? I've heard of other places
that just do injections.
That method alone
has a higher chance of the varicose veins coming back.
We do use injection sclerotherapy for very small veins. As a vascular surgeon,
Dr. Widmeyer can offer the best treatment for each person's vein
problem,
which sometimes does require minor surgery to get the best long-term result.
5. What is
Endovenous Laser Ablation?
This is an exciting
new procedure that replaces old-fashioned vein stripping
in about 80-90% of patients. Rather than large incisions in the leg, a small
needle puncture in the lower thigh is used to thread a thin laser
filament through
the saphenous vein. Using ultrasound to precisely place the laser and local
anesthesia (numbing medicine), the laser is activated as it is withdrawn,
damaging and sealing the vein. By sealing this incompetent vein,
it can no longer
transmit the pressure to the lower veins to cause varicose veins.
Dr. Widmeyer was one of the first physicians in the state to perform this procedure.
Since founding the Virginia Vein Center (now Vein & Cosmetic Solutions) in 2001,
he has treated hundreds of patients—with
excellent results.
6. What happens
to the vein?
It scars down
and is absorbed by the body.
7. Doesn't
that affect the circulation in the leg?
Varicose veins
don't work properly, meaning that they are letting blood travel
back down the leg instead of up toward the heart. Therefore, removing
them
is usually helpful.
8. What if
I need a vein for heart bypass someday?
Varicose veins
are stretched out and are not usable for bypass.
9. What about
spider veins?
Dr. Widmeyer
uses the laser and injection sclerotherapy to treat spider veins.
This is effective on the legs, face, chest and most areas of the
body.
10. Will my
insurance pay for treatments?
In many cases,
yes. Some types of vein problems are considered cosmetic by
insurance companies. Your veins will be evaluated by duplex ultrasound and
digital photography. Along with Dr. Widmeyer's evaluation, these
will be sent to
your insurance provider for determination of payment prior to any procedures
being done. If your provider denies coverage, we can help you appeal
it, or you
can decide to pay the cost yourself. We are happy to arrange payment plans
with you.
11. What can
I expect during my first visit?
Bring a loose
fitting pair of shorts. You will be evaluated by Dr. Widmeyer
and, in some cases, have an ultrasound study done. You
will also be fitted for compression stockings during this visit (if needed).
We
provide these at the office at a very reasonable price. We like to complete
your
evaluation and develop a treatment plan all on your first visit. We will
then schedule
treatments for a future date.
12. Why did Virginia Vein Center change its name?
We opted to change the name of the practice in order to reflect
our expanded scope of services (particularly those relating to
cosmetic procedures). The staff is still the same—as is the
commitment to providing an outstanding level of patient care.
